3 Questions to Ask Yourself before Remodeling Your Home

We all get a little tired of our space from time to time. It may be that the space just needs a fresh coat of paint and some new décor, or it may be that the space needs to be remodeled for a totally new look or functionality.

Before you start clearing the space and looking at building samples, you need to take some time to really think about and plan for what you want. Here are the top three questions you should ask yourself before you start your remodel:

House Remodeling

You’ve been looking at that empty, damp basement space for a long time and wanting something better. But what, exactly? Do you want to turn it into a rec room for the whole family? Do you want a fancy laundry space? Or do you want to turn it into a man cave just for you?

Knowing what you want for the space will determine how you should move forward. For example, if you wanted to turn that basement into a high-end laundry space, you would need to talk with a plumber about having the right connections, and you would need to create specific spaces for soaking or folding. In contract, if you wanted to turn it into a man cave, you’d need to work with an electrician to have the proper hookups where you wanted them, and you’d spend more time on décor. You need to be clear about your goals for a space before you get started on your planning.

What is Your Budget?

You may be dreaming of your dream kitchen and thinking of slate countertops and a huge, chef’s oven. But can your space actually support those things? And, more importantly, can your budget support them?

How much you have to spend will have a big impact on the scope of your remodeling project. Your budget can determine how much you can do – such as building on an extra room or simply converting a room you have – and what kind of materials you can choose – such as laminate floors or real hardwood. You can talk through your options with an experienced contractor who can guide you. Your contractor can help you learn about the options within your budget so you can meet as many of your goals as possible without breaking the bank.

Will You Do the Work Yourself?

Everyone is into DIY projects these days. Pinterest and YouTube have made everyone believe they can do any job and save a lot of money. Plus, they get bragging rights for doing the work themselves.

If you are thinking of doing the work yourself, you need to think through the pros and cons carefully. You may need to buy a lot of tools to complete the project, which can add to the cost. You also don’t have the knowledge or the connections to find materials at the best price, the way a contractor would. Finally, you don’t have the skills or experience to do the work as well, as quickly, or as safely.

Hiring a contractor will ensure that the work is done the way you want it, and you do not risk your safety or the health of your home. Your contractor will also be able to get results that you can’t and will know how to save you money.

Think through these and other questions before you get started on any remodeling project, no matter how big or small. If you hire a professional contractor, which we highly recommend, the contractor will help you think through these and other issues so that your project is a success.
